New to Jiu Jitsu?

Starting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can be one of the most rewarding decisions you make—for your confidence, fitness, and personal growth. Whether you’re nervous, curious, or just unsure where to start — we’ve got answers.

What is Jiu-Jitsu? How Is It Different From Other Martial Arts?

In a real-life confrontation, it can be difficult to land precise punches or kicks under stress. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling based martial art focuses on leverage, technique, and control.

You’ll learn how to stay calm, stay safe and use leverage, technique and timing instead of brute force to escape various positions, defend against attacks, control someone trying to escape, and apply submissions like joint locks and chokes—while also learning to defend against them, even against larger, stronger people..

It’s especially effective for beginners, women, and kids who may need to defend themselves against larger opponents.

Does Jiu Jitsu Actually Work?

Some self-defence and martial arts training has become a bit of a joke. But Jiu-Jitsu has gained its reputation for one simple reason: it works.

Its effectiveness in real combat against other martial arts was first demonstrated in Brazil through challenge matches issued by the Gracie family. This legacy was taken to new heights when the Gracie's brought Jiu-Jitsu to America and created the UFC to showcase their revolutionary style.

Beyond the octagon, there are countless real-life stories and footage of people successfully using Jiu-Jitsu in critical situations. As a result many organisations have adopted Jiu Jitsu! Within the Gracie Jiu Jitsu organisation alone, we teach law enforcement, military, security staff and even healthcare professionals.

How Safe Is It? Will I get injured?

We can't speak for other Jiu Jitsu gyms but safety is our top priority at every stage of your Gracie Tameside journey. You’ll never be thrown into anything you’re not ready for. Our programs progress at your pace, with partners and instructors who prioritise control and care.

We build your foundational knowledge—positions, controls, and escapes—before introducing live sparring, which helps prevent injuries by ensuring you move with technique and confidence.

Every class follows a structured curriculum, with instructors highlighting safety tips alongside each drill, so you can train hard, grow quickly, and feel secure on the mat.

What Do You Wear?

Jiu-Jitsu training involves different styles, and what you wear can significantly impact how you train.

All of our beginner classes are taught in a white Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gi, which continues into the advanced classes.

The Gi is a full uniform with a belt, similar to Judo or Karate, though with a distinct fit and feel. The Gi can be grabbed and used to aid in escapes, submissions, or throws, adding a unique strategic element.

The Master Cycle will introduce No-Gi training, which involves a rash guard and shorts. With nothing to grab, the pace tends to be faster, and techniques adapt accordingly.

Fingerless gloves aren’t typically used in BJJ since there’s no striking in the sport, although, because we train Jiu-Jitsu for self-defence or an MMA setting, gloves are used to safely incorporate strikes into practice.

How is Jiu Jitsu different from MMA?

While Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a core part of MMA, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu at Gracie University Training Centres is fundamentally different. Our focus is not on winning tournaments or preparing for cage fights—it’s on teaching real-world self-defence that anyone can use, regardless of size, strength, or athletic background.

Unlike MMA, which combines striking and grappling for competition, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is designed to help you stay calm, control an opponent, and protect yourself in real-life situations—even against someone who may be bigger, stronger, or more aggressive.

You won’t be learning how to fight in a ring—you’ll be learning how to walk through the world with confidence.

Is Jiu Jitsu Only For Sporty or Athletic People?

Not at all. Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is based on technique and leverage, not strength or size. It’s designed to help you overcome larger, stronger opponents — and anyone can learn it.

There is absolutely no fitness requirements for any of our beginner classes. You will fit right in!

Give yourself some time, and you will be astounded at what your body is capable of and how much you can improve!

Our certified instructors are trained to keep their teaching simple, effective, and beginner-focused. So even the most uncoordinated person will develop these skills! Come see for yourself.

Can You Compete In Jiu Jitsu?

Yes, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is an interesting and engaging art/sport that has a big competition scene, and whilst some of our members have decided to test their skills in this format, we don't go out of our way to prepare students (rules, strategy etc) for competition.

However, our first priority for our students is that they learn the fundamentals of self-defence. What you need to do to survive against an aggressive, untrained opponent may be different from what you would need to learn for a sport jiu-jitsu tournament.

We understand that most people who train with us are doing so for fitness, health and confidence. When practised correctly, BJJ can be an activity to enjoy for many years!

Frequently Asked Questions

Gracie v Brazilian Jiu Jitsu - What's the Difference?

Gracie and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu are essentially the same thing, with slight differences in terms of the purpose for training.

To understand this more, you need to look back at the history of Jiu Jitsu...

When it was originally founded by Grand Masters Carlos and Helio Gracie in the early 1900s, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu only had one purpose – effectiveness in real "no-holds-barred" fights.

Several decades later, when sportive competition was introduced and popularised, there was a distinct shift in training objectives at most BJJ schools causing them to neglect the self-defence aspect of jiu-jitsu, such that students could train for many years without ever learning how their grappling skills would apply against a striking opponent in a real fight.

At all Certified Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Training Centres, street self-defence remains the top priority throughout all of our training programs.

From your very first class, every technique you learn was specifically chosen due to its likelihood of being used, and proven effectiveness in real combat.

Our belief is that only once a student learns all the necessary skills to stay safe in a real fight should he or she begin exploring the sportive aspects of jiu-jitsu.

Where Are You Based?

We have a full time facility dedicated to teaching Gracie Jiu Jitsu! Our address is:

Unit 1 Vale Mill, Huddersfield Rd, Mossley, OL5 9LL

What Do You Wear For Your First Class?

For your first class, you'll need to wear something comfortable that covers your shoulders (t-shirt, joggers, gym attire). If you decide to sign up, you will need a white Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gi. You do not need to purchase one from us but we do have great introductory offers for new members.

I Have No Experience - Are The Classes For Me?

We believe anyone can train Jiu Jitsu, but not every gym is for everyone.

Every beginner class is taught with no previous experience necessary, so you will not feel left behind.

Our program is structured by class number (23 group classes), so you will always know exactly what techniques you will be learning on any given day. You can even check out the techniques of the day on GracieUniversity.com before class to get a head start!

I Have An Old Injury, Can I Still Join?

Yes! We understand that most of our members aren't planning on becoming a pro fighter and are doing this to improve their health, lifestyle and confidence, so getting injured isn't an option.

Safety is the number one concern in all of our classes, regardless of whether you're a beginner or trained for years.

Anyone who doesn't prioritise the safety of their partners is not welcome at Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Tameside.

I Have Trained Jiu Jitsu Before, Where Should I Start?

This will depend on how much experience you have. The best idea would be to give us a call on 0161 527 1193 and ask to speak to Alex so you can get more specific information on which classes would suit you.

Do I Need To Build My Fitness First?

Not at all. In fact, many students starting in our classes had very low fitness levels before before they started.

There is absolutely no experience necessary for any of our beginner classes. You will fit right in!

Give yourself some time, and you will be astounded at what your body is capable of and how much you can improve!

Our certified instructors are trained to keep their teaching simple, effective, and beginner-focused. So even the most uncoordinated person will develop these skills! Come see for yourself!

Are The Classes For Women As Well?

Absolutely! Specifically because Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) has proven reliable in defending against larger opponents for nearly a century, it is the perfect martial art for women.

Many women train in our ladies-only classes and then transfer into our mixed adult Gracie Combatives classes. However, both programs are suitable for female beginners.

We love seeing the physical confidence develop in our female students as they gain self-defence skills on the mat!

Do I Have To Compete?

No. Our first priority for our martial arts students is that they learn the fundamentals of self-defence. What you need to do to survive against an aggressive, untrained opponent may be different from what you would need to learn for a sport jiu-jitsu tournament.

Beyond this, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is an interesting and engaging art/sport that has a big competition scene, and whilst some of our members have decided to test their skills in this format, we don't go out of our way to prepare students (rules, strategy etc) for competition.

We understand that most people who train with us are doing so for fitness, health and confidence. When practised correctly, BJJ can be an activity to enjoy for many years!

If competition is your primary goal for training, gyms like Stealth BJJ may be a better fit.
